Bill of Sale Aug 31, 2026
If you are a Californian living in the Golden State, you know that driving is more than a means of getting from point A to point B—it’s a way of life! Countless people have spent many hours in their automobiles while taking in the beautiful scenery of California whether it be driving along the Pacific Coast Highway or navigating the traffic on the freeways of Los Angeles.
However, when it comes time for you to upgrade your car or truck, you are faced with the same dilemma that thousands of other California drivers experience on a daily basis from San Diego to Sacramento: Should I take my car/truck to the dealership for convenience and take thousands of dollars in depreciation or should I try to sell it to someone privately and get what my car is worth?
For years, the private market was much like the Wild West; meaning that you had to deal with unreliable people attempting to buy a vehicle from Craigslist, worrying about whether or not the buyer was going to scam you out of your money, and having to figure out how to navigate through all the red tape at the California DMV by yourself. Fortunately, that has changed. California drivers no longer have to choose between safety and losses when selling their cars.
Introducing KarKiosk. We have taken the agony out of selling your car in California by revolutionizing the way people sell their cars. We have combined the security and range of tools that you find when selling your car to a dealership, with the high profit margin associated with private sales, providing you with everything that you need to be able to take control and get the highest value for your automobile.
In this guide you will find everything you need to know, step-by-step and easy to follow in order to complete a successful private sale in California without all the hassles.
The California Advantage: Reasons To Sell Privately
Before I explain the how-to, let’s talk about the why sell your car privately. In a state that has a high cost of living, leaving money on the table is not just frustrating—it is poor financial planning.
When you trade in your car to a dealer, you’re paying for the dealer’s convenience. Dealers have to recondition, market, and store the car, all while making a profit. The money that they take out of the average car deal goes directly into your pocket.
On the other hand, the private market in California is large and has a tremendous demand for good quality used vehicles, which means you will receive a premium price from a prospective buyer because they will be able to purchase the vehicle directly from you as opposed to purchasing the same vehicle from a dealership with no personal relationship.
The Financial Reality: Private Sale versus Trade-In
To visualize the differences, the following are a few general pros and cons. A trade-in will provide you with the ability to sell your car very quickly but it will not give you nearly as much value as what you thought you were going to receive for your car.
Feature | Selling Privately with KarKiosk | Trading In at a Dealership |
Sale Price | High. You set the price and keep 100% of the profit. | Low. Dealers offer wholesale value to leave room for their markup. |
Negotiation Control | Total Control. You decide who to sell to and for how much. | Zero Control. You are at the mercy of the dealer's appraisal. |
Fees | Minimal to None. No hidden commissions or "reconditioning" fees. | High. Doc fees, admin fees, and lower trade values eat your equity. |
Convenience | Streamlined. KarKiosk tools handle vetting and listing. | High. You drop the keys and leave, but you pay for it. |
Market Reach | Broad. Your car is seen on multiple platforms. | Limited. The dealer only cares about their inventory needs. |

Step-by-Step: How to Sell Your Car in California with KarKiosk
Ready to get started? Follow this comprehensive guide to navigate the process smoothly.
Step 1 - Preparation & general presentation
California is one of the largest car culture areas in the world, so buyers are particular about the cars they will buy. Therefore, prior to listing your car for sale, you should make an effort to shine.
Thorough Cleaning: In order to make a car shine, just washing it off will not suffice. The mats should be vacuumed, all of the surfaces (dashboards), and the windows (inside and out) should be cleaned.
Minor Repairs: If your car has a burned-out bulb or a missing knob, make the repairs. These are inexpensive elements that can dramatically affect buyer confidence in your vehicle when you sell it.
Collect Records: If you can find receipts for your maintenance services, California customers want to see that the car has been properly maintained (oil changes, smog checks).
Step 2 - Create the Power Listing
KarKiosk will handle all the marketing for you. All you have to do is list your car on the website.
Enter the VIN: You will enter either your License Plate or VIN and then all the core specs will automatically pull from the system.
Upload Photos: Use your KarStudio credits. Always take pictures at the "golden hour" (just before sunset) to give your photos that nice California glow. Take photos from all angles of the car (exterior), front seating area (2 views), rear seating area, odometer, and all tires.
Write a Description: Although you want to be honest about your car condition when writing the description.Provide a Highway Mileage Disclosure and Cold A/C Feature illustration along with any other reasons you have/must sell. Honesty establishes trustworthy relationships more rapidly than just selling the car.
Step 3: Pricing Strategy
Overpricing slows down the process, whereas underpricing can cost you cash.
Use our “Price Your Car Right” tool to help price your vehicle based on recent sales of similar cars in your California Zip Code area/market.
Leave yourself some “Wiggle Room” for negotiation - if you want $15,000 - list it at $15,500.
Step 4: Offer Management & Validation
When your ad goes live on our website, we send it out to many different places, getting you lots of inquiries.
Safety First: Use the KarKiosk message center for communication. Do not provide your home address or personal cell phone number early in the process.
Buyer Screening: Do not respond to lowball offers - these will waste your time. Respond to those buyers looking for information about the condition and history of the vehicle.
Arrange the test drive using our scheduling tool as you develop a serious buyer. Only meet in a public location (preferably during daylight). Preferred locations are police station parking lots or busy shopping centers.
Step 5: Test Drive & Inspect
It is standard procedure for the buyer to drive the car.
Before providing them access to your keys, check their driver's license and ride with them during their passenger drive.
It is not uncommon for the buyer to request a pre-purchase inspection (by a mechanic) on their vehicle. It is generally understood in CA that buyers will want their mechanic to inspect the vehicle. You should be happy when you get this request as it indicates buyer intent.
Step 6: Close the Deal
You and the buyer have established an agreed-upon price. Now the paper part! That's where most people get scared. If you are organized, the actual paperwork will be easy even in California!
Get your payment! (Cash or cashier's check) Meet at the buyer's bank to verify the funds if possible.
Next, you will need to sign the title with the "pink slip" (Certificate of Title). Your signature goes on line 1. If the car was manufactured within the last 10 years (or will be considered 20 under the new federal rules, but check with your local DMV), you will also need to enter the odometer reading on the title. If you make any mistakes when entering the information, do not use white-out. Any mistakes voids the original title.
You should fill out a Bill of Sale even though it is not actually required by the DMV since you have the title. The Bill of Sale (REG 135) is very helpful for your records. It will document the date and how much you received for the vehicle.
California Specifics: What You Must Know
There are some things about California that you need to know before selling your vehicle.
First, California has some of the strictest vehicle laws in the entire Country, especially related to emissions. If you do not follow these laws, you could end up getting into legal trouble or your sale could be voided.
Smog Requirements
This is the big one. Under California law, the seller is responsible for providing the buyer with a valid smog certification.
The certificate must be less than 90 days old at the time of the sale.
If the car fails smog, you must fix it. You cannot legally sell a car to a private party in California that does not pass smog, even if you say it is "as-is," unless you file it as "Non-Operational" (PNO), which makes it very hard to sell.
Exemptions: Electric vehicles, diesel vehicles older than 1997, and gas vehicles less than 4 model years old are typically exempt (though a smog transfer fee may still apply).
Transfer of Vehicle Ownership (Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability)
A Buyer is the buyer of a vehicle; However, the seller remains the vehicle's owner in the DMV until the Title is transferred to the New Owner. The seller is liable for any actions taken by the buyer if the buyer runs a red light or crashes within one hour of receiving the vehicle from the seller.
Important Step - The seller must file a Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability with the DMV within 5 days of the sale of the vehicle. File the NRL on the DMV's website to notify the DMV that they don't own the vehicle anymore. The seller will no longer receive parking citations or face litigation because of the buyer's actions.
Summary
Selling your vehicle directly to a buyer can be a smart way to get cash out of your vehicle and build equity, instead of allowing the dealership to pocket any equity your vehicle may have had, which could amount to hundreds or thousands of dollars.
